Canon VIXIA HF R300 Review

Canon USA introduce to us their 2012 R3 range of great camcorders with 3 models, the cheapest being the Canon VIXIA HF R300 recording to a single SDXC card slot.

For Full HD even in low light, Canon have included a new Canon 3.28 Megapixel CMOS wide-angle Image Sensor with DIGIC DV III Image Processor in the VIXIA HF R300, added a 51x Advanced Zoom, and for super steady shots, the SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization and Intelligent IS are effective to full zoom range.

The new Canon VIXIA HF R300 lets you select your choice of recording mode from AVCHD or MP4 formats but be aware that in MP4format the maximum recording time is 30 minutes with 4GB the maximum file size.

Recording will stop automatically when these limits are reached while recording to MP4. AVCHD gives you the best quality for movie making, but if it’s for easy sharing such as to the social networks, the MP4 format is more than adequate.  

Once you have selected your recording format, the VIXIA HF R300 optimizes image stabilization automatically with Intelligent IS for the best shooting conditions from four different modes.

Switch to Smart AUTO for the best results from 38 pre-loaded settings from Auto Tele Macro or choose Cinema Look Filters for a whole range of effects, and with a pre-loaded choice of 27 different frame graphics clip art and animated effects, your movie production is only limited by your imagination.

Try 24p Cinema Mode for the Hollywood movie look or for networking, 30p Progressive is ideal for short movie clips. A Story Creator feature suggests a list of scenes and shooting tips for polishing your movie.

For the best audio quality from the Canon VIXIA HF R300, microphone and headphone terminals are included, while framing is aided with a generous fingertip controlled 3 inch Flat Touch Panel LCD.

For an entry level camcorder, the Canon VIXIA HF R300 has many commendable features, and keeps the cost down to just over $300 by omitting an internal flash drive and Wi-Fi which are included in the other 2 camcorders in the Canon 2012 R3 HD camcorder range.
